The author, a Brit named Des Wilson, travelled to sites where the game developed - the cattle trails, ghost towns, Mississippi delta and the Texas back roads - "to sniff the air and duck into the dark alleys where the game was played". The very premise of Ghosts at the Table, is that it should be considered a work of original research as well as a personal account of the characters that populate the mythology of the game. ![]() Two-parts fluff to one-part real value makes for a mediocre book over-all. At times it is brilliant and daring, with enough insight and substance to save it from a two star rating, however these moments are too infrequent. ![]() A very uneven book that tries to be too many different things.
